for 16-and 17-year-olds:
🛑 Class D License Restrictions (Joshua’s Law):
Curfew:
No driving between 12:00 AM and 5:00 AM — no exceptions, even for work or activities.
Passenger Limitations:
· 1st six months: Only immediate family members are allowed as passengers.
· 2nd 6 months: One (1) non-family passenger under 21.
· 12 months – Up to three (3) non-family passengers under 21.
Violation = 180-day license suspension + $100 reinstatement fee (and possibly more penalties).
✅ To Get a Class D License, Your Teen Must:
Be at least 16 years old
Have held a Class CP Learner’s Permit for 1 year & 1 day
Have no major violations during the permit period
📋 Take these documents to the DDS:
You must present documentation showing your identity, residential address, and US citizenship or proof of lawful status in the United States. Your full social security number must be provided on the required online License/ID/Permit Form. Please refer to Real ID Requirements for more information.
Learner’s Permit – Be prepared to surrender your learner’s permit when you visit a DDS location to get a Class D driver’s license.
Proof of School Enrollment - If you are under the age of 18, you must provide proof of school enrollment. All documents must contain the first and last name of the student. ADAP or eADAP Certificate of Completion – If your teen took the GA Alcohol and Drug Awareness program in health class, the school administration can provide the certificate of completion. If taken online, your teen will need an eADAP certificate of completion.
Certificate of Completion for the Driver’s Ed course - The course must be completed at a DDS-certified driving school, like Drive Smart Georgia.

Parent/Guardian Signature (Affirming 40 hours of supervised driving, incl. 6 at night)
